Circular economy

The transition towards a circular economy involves a global challenge in a range of fields, such as plastics, consumer goods, food, chemicals, and the construction sector. The Netherlands is firmly committed to this transition and aims to circularise its economy by 2050, with a 50 per cent reduction in the use of primary raw materials such as minerals, fossil resources, and metals by 2030. Such a transition calls for technological, social, and system innovations. The IE2018 shows the most innovative approaches to all these issues, initiated by the business community as well as research institutes and cities.

As regards chemical substances, materials, and products, a safe design is a prerequisite to enable recycling and thus to circularise the economy. This is a complex matter, as chemical substances are used for a wide range of purposes – such as fire resistance, elasticity, colour, and preservation – for which substitution by less harmful alternatives is not a simple option. Ergo, this requires targeted innovation. And this calls for efficient collaboration among supply chain companies. In an interactive session, several speakers will engage in a discussion with the audience. One such speaker is Joel Tickner of the University of Massachusetts Lowell, an expert in this field. In addition, the Safe Chemicals Innovation Agenda, a Research &Development agenda, will be presented and discussed.

In the agrifood sector, a consortium of public and private partners have been exploring the opportunities and challenges of using blockchain technology individually and jointly. In this session FoodInsight, Oxfam, Moyee Coffee, Fairfood and The Fork present a number of recent applications and invite you to join us in the discussion and the experiments.

The agrifood sector is confronted with a number of  challenges related to improving  transparency, efficiency and distribution of income in food chains. Many of these issues have to do with the reliability of information or lack of information. Blockchain technology (BCT), essentially a distributed decentralised database secured by cryptography, provides a means to ensure integrity of records on identities and transactions. BCT is therefore considered to be of high relevance to improving trust, fairness and efficiency in the agrifood sector.
